One of the sports that use a board as equipment is surfing. Considered by some an extreme sport, surfing is a water sport whose main prerequisite is being a good swimmer. As with any other sport one needs to practice extensively if he or she wants to be successful. There are several rules and a few "Don’t"-s to consider when you are learning how to surf. surfing is a sport that can be started at any age and if you think you want to learn how to surf you can take online lessons, you can read books about it or you can take a course in one of the surfing places around the globe. Since surfing is a sport where one learns to ride the wave, it cannot be done on any beach. Furthermore the beaches where surfing is available are usually busy with surfers so beginners might feel a little discouraged at first. However with a little bit of help and exercising you can venture yourself and try and ride a wave with other surfers.
To learn how to surf you need to get a board called a surfboard. There are several kinds of surfboards: the long boards and the short boards. The different designs, riding styles and lengths of boards are also the ones that divide surfing into two main categories: longboarding and shorboarding. Apart for the board one also needs a wetsuit and some nice waves. If selecting the wetsuit is the easy task, choosing the board and finding the right waves might prove to be more difficult.
When you go and get your wetsuit treat as any other piece of clothing that you are buying and make sure you try it before you buy it. If it feels comfortably and you can move in it easily then it will be ok for you. Wetsuit models are released every year, thus buying an older model will probably save you some money. Since you are just learning how to surf do not rush into buying all the expensive things until you master surfing.
Professional surfers and instructors advice people who want to learn how to surf to learn the differences between the three types of surfboards: the funboard, the longboard and the shortboard. Beginners are also advised to try a funboard first because it is in between the longboard and the shortboard. Also you can buy a used surfboard as your first learning board. You will also need a leash to make sure you are not losing your board once you actually try and catch the wave and some wax to wax your board.
Now that you have all you need to learn how to surf do not rush to enter the water and catch the wave. You need to learn how to paddle, how to lift yourself on the board and only then how to catch the wave. And also very important you need to know the rules. Think of surfing as driving and learn who has the right of way when the wave comes. Not following the rules can put you and others in danger. Since you are just learning how to surf you should try to find a smaller beach where you can exercise all the moves.
The first move one needs to learn is the pop-up. This can be done on land first until you get the right way to do it. When you go in the water with your board you are lying on the board. The pop-up is the actual lifting from your stomach to your feet and the finding of the balance. Of course this is easier to exercise on sand and only when you are comfortable enough and you found your equilibrium points you should try it on water. The beaches with small swells are the ideal places for people who want to learn how to surf to exercise their paddling and pop-ups. Do not try to catch a wave before you are comfortable with paddling and you have an idea of how to control the board. To actually catch a wave you have to move further away from the shore and wait for a series of waves.
When you think you got one, you and your board should be turned towards the shore and waiting for the wave. A lot of practice will let you know when the waves are right, when to start paddling and when to try and stand on the board. Often times you will fall from the board or the wave will turn the board up side down. When this happens make sure you stay a few second longer under the water to avoid getting hit by the board, then get your board and wait for the next set of waves.
